THE BRIGANTES

This season we're taking our audience to six geographical hotspots for classical music: France, the Nordics, Russia, Germany, England, and America! Why not guarantee your seat at every concert and save 20% on the whole lot by buying a season ticket here!

We drop in 'over the pond' for our last flight to explore the bold, diverse soundscape of American music. From the brilliance of Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F, a dazzling fusion of classical form and big-city energy, to the rustic charm and infectious energy of Copland’s Rodeo, this programme captures the essence of a nation on the move.

Welcome to the 2026/2027 season of The Brigantes Orchestra! Step into a musical time machine and explore how great composers have shaped the sounds we hear today. Each concert in our new season begins in a different year, then travels across the centuries to reveal how familiar ideas - beautiful melodies, vivid storytelling, nature, memory and national character - have been reimagined again and again. Why not guarantee your seat at every concert and save 20% on the whole lot by buying a season ticket here!

Our journey begins in 1792 with Haydn's famous Surprise Symphony and a musical idea everyone can follow: take a tune and transform it! Four composers show how the same principal of variation can sound witty, lyrical, virtuosic or brilliantly modern. We're thrilled to welcome back Tim Horton after his wonderful performance of Grieg last season!

We leap to 1932 with Britten's sparkling Sinfonietta before tracing its musical family tree back to Bach and forward to Stravinsky. This programme celebrates music built on conversation - solo instruments stepping forward, weaving together and passing ideas between then - showing how composers across three hundred years kept rediscovering the joy of smaller, more intimate orchestral writing.

Our next stop is 1887, where Rimsky-Korsakov paints a dazzling musical picture of Spain. From there, Spanish rhythms and colour inspire very different responses - from Prokofiev's expressive violin writing to the vibrant storytelling of Falla's Three-Cornered Hat. It's a programme full of energy, atmosphere, (castanets), and unmistakable character!

Arriving in 1894, we step into Debussy's shimmering world of sound and atmosphere. The journey continues with Vaughan Williams' and Beethoven - each composer inspired by the countryside, birdsong and open landscapes. All captured in their own distinctive way. This concert is part of the Classical Sheffield Festival 2027.

Arvo Pärt's haunting tribute to Benjamin Britten takes us to 1977 and opens a programme shaped by reflection and remembrance. Britten, Shostakovich and Vaughan Williams offer very different responses to conflict - sometimes questioning, sometimes hopeful - showing how composers use music to process the world around them.

Our journey ends with a year that stays in the memory of musicians as the year of Mozart's death - 1791. His unfinished Requiem is played alongside another iconic, unfinished work, the 8th Symphony of Franz Schubert. Completed by later hands, both pieces remain powerful, moving and deeply human, reminding us that great music can outlive its moment and continue speaking across generations.
