Our opening concert is all things French, with the two most recognisable pieces to come from the region, Ravel's "fifteen-minute crescendo", Boléro and the Organ Symphony of Saint-Saëns, a proper test for the acoustics of Sheffield Cathedral.

The chilly weather continues into our third stop, Russia, but the music is warm and getting warmer! Tchaikovsky's much-loved music for Romeo and Juliet boils the story down to its essesnce, while Stravinsky presents his youthful virtuosity with the ballet The Firebird.

Time to drop in at home for an early summer homage to that most British of music festivals, The Proms! After a quick spin around our solar system courtesy of Gustav Holst, we're recreating the atmosphere of the Last Night of the Proms with all the usual pomp and circumstance! Featuring the Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus.

Our season finale is a powerful affair featuring John Williams' idiomatic, moving pieces from Schindler's List and Tchaikovsky's penultimate symphony which takes the listener from tragic darkness to blazing light. Opening the concert, the Brigantes explore Barber's sublime Adagio for Strings.

A really special concert for the spring introducing a new type of solo performer, sand artist Rosa van der Vijver (link in Dutch) who will illustrate Ravel's fairy tale ballet Mother Goose live to the music! We're also featuring a piece by Dutch composer Henriëtte Bosmans (1895 to 1952), her exotic Concertino for Piano and Orchestra, as well as scores by Saint-Saëns and Poulenc.
